The Montessu is an intensely fruity, elegant, full-bodied wine that combines traditionally Sardinian Carignano with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot from Sulcis, the Southwest corner of the island. The grapes are grown on spurred cordon vines rooted in calcareous, clay-rich, and sandy soils. The vineyards are exceptionally hot and dry in the summer and temperate through the winter.
This is expressive take on Mediterranean wine is deep ruby red to the eye, with an intense, full palate of dark fruit and a deep licorice finish.
“This is a dense and rich red with smoked wood, dried bark, tea and ripe fruit. Very flavourful. Full body. intense. Velvety tannins. Drink in a year or two.”

“A stylish, fresh red, with spiced black raspberry and black currant fruit and accents of green olive, dried thyme and sweet smoke, finely meshed with long, supple tannins. Medium- to full-bodied, this shows good focus and length. Carignan, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2027.”

“Youthful dark purple colour. Pure, fruity and floral nose, plenty of cassis, darker fruit, plum and aromatic herbs like sage and mint. The palate has good density but remains medium bodied with a fine freshness and young but ripe tannin, layered and nuanced with fine length, still youthful but surely promising in an elegant, and restrained Cabernet/Bordeaux style.”

“This is the estate’s second wine, which is a tad less formal than the top-shelf Barrua. The 2015 Montessu represents a hearty blend of 60% Carignano with equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah. It ages in oak for up to one year. The wine reveals an inky blackish appearance with spots of ruby brilliance that shine from within. Cabernet-like aromas of dark fruit, spice, grilled herb and black olive are immediate and recognizable. The wine is layered and soft in terms of texture, and it grips the palate with firm intensity.”

“Moderately saturated purple-ruby. Flint and graphite camouflage small dark berries, bell pepper and herbs on the nose. Then bright and fresh with clean flavours of minerals and small dark berries. Long and crisp on the pristine finish.”
