LCBO Vintages Release
In New Zealand’s largest wine-producing region, surrounded by a sea of vineyards owned by corporate wineries, Astrolabe stands strong as an independent, family-owned producer of stunning wines. The Waghorn family should be proud of their success: five consecutive vintages of 90+ scores from Wine Spectator earned through perseverance and skill.
This Pinot Gris was made from grapes grown in the lower Awatere and Wairau Valleys, and the Kekerengu Coast. After being meticulously picked and sorted by hand, grapes were pressed in whole-clusters and then cool-fermented on light grape solids to add a round texture and complexity.
Light straw in colour, the nose shows pear and quince with a light peach and citrus note with a whiff of cardamom. The palate is clean and crisp with nice acidity and weight that expresses flavours of stone fruit and pear with a lime citrus note on the finish. Drink now or keep for the next six years.
“Ripe and reasonably weighty pinot gris, with classic fresh pear and honeysuckle flavours plus a dash of lime and citrus. A fresh and lively wine with subliminal sweetness and a refreshingly dry finish. A smooth-textured and appealing wine. Drink Date: 2018 to 2022.”
