LCBO Vintages Release
To be classified as a “Reserva”, a wine must spend one year or more in oak, followed by two or more in bottle. What makes the Baigorri Reserva Rioja DOCa special are two things. Firstly, this wine is a single-varietal, made from only the famed Tempranillo grapes of the region. Secondly, the grapes used to make this wine are from old vines that have undergone countless growing cycles, allowing the roots to dig deeper into the ground and resulting in a more concentration of flavours and greater expression of the terroir of Rioja in the glass.
After de-stemming and crushing the grapes, a long maceration in stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels combined with natural pumping-over of juice on the floating cap of grape skins ensured the best extraction of colour and tannins. The wine then underwent malolactic fermentation to ease the naturally high acidity levels of the Tempranillo grape. Finally the resulting wine underwent 18 months of ageing in new French oak barrels in order to add further complexity to the nose and palate while smoothing out the tannins.
The resulting wine is a Rioja that does well to express terroir, while showing its uniqueness in both the nose and the palate. Its highly-concentrated, dark ruby colour exudes intense aromas of black fruit and fruit compote. The palate is tantalized with a healthy, racy acidity in order to balance the intense flavours of black fruits and baking spices. The finish is long and intense, showing once again that the Baigorri Reserva Rioja DOCa is a Rioja that was made to impress even the most discerning of palates.
“This big, bold Rioja has much more oak than the other wines from this producer, but if anything this holds it back a touch by making it chewy. However, there is some nice black cherry fruit beneath the smoke. Drink now before that fades.”

“Full ruby. Displays aromas and flavors of blackberry, dried cherry and plum, with a suave floral quality emerging with aeration. Shows an energetic quality thanks to juicy acidity and picks up notes of vanilla and spicecake on the back half. Rich yet lively, with strong finishing punch, supple tannins and lingering smokiness.”
