V.S. (“Vendimia Seleccionada”) is a wine for the cellar. Concentrated, complex, and elegant, it combines fruit from a small selection of old vines from the winery’s two very best vineyards.
A wet cool, winter allowed the sandy clay soil to accumulate sufficient water reserves to pull through a warm, dry spring. A cool summer encouraged the steady development of acidity, sugar, and tannin in tandem. Autumn began with heat and sporadic storms that eased for a late September harvest.
Fruit was harvested from the estate’s Tudela del Duero and Traspinedo vineyards by hand, and collected in small boxes to avoid crushing the berries. Upon arrival at the winery, fruit was meticulously sorted by hand and moved by gravity to ferment in small lots by vineyard plot. Fermentation by native yeast, followed by extended maceration on the skins, lasted two to three weeks. Bottled in the spring of 2017, the wine spent 26 months in new and old French and American oak.
The age-worthy profile will reward time in the cellar: superb, rich aromatics with a broad palate, compact tannins, and a mineral spine. It is a wine with freshness and energy and considerable length.
“Graphite, sanguine and espresso notes frame a deep core of currant and blackberry flavours in this rich red. Firm, chewy tannins and balsamic acidity keep this balanced through the savoury finish. Shows density and focus. Tempranillo. Drink now through 2024. 3,100 cases made.”
