Wines of this noble Hungarian region have been winning praise and accolades since the 17th century. This dessert wine delighted the palates of many a European royal, including famous figures such as Stephen the Great of Moldova, Emperor Franz Josef and King Louis XIV of France – who famously coined this beverage as “Vinum Regum, Rex Vinorum” (“Wine of Kings, King of Wines”).
Chateau Imperial’s Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos carries on that tradition of using a natural phenomenon (in this case, noble rot) and human ingenuity to craft a well-balanced, elegant style of the famous Tokaj region dessert wine. This wine is made with 100% Estate vineyard Furmint grapes, grown in the volcanic soil of a Certified Organic site, on the south slope of Mount Tokaj where vinification dates back to 15th century. The fruit is left to hang on the vine until the grapes are affected by noble rot, slowly drying, shrinking, and concentrating in flavour before they are meticulously harvested by hand.
This Tokaj Aszú is a special wine, a wine that elevates the concept of “liquid gold”. It’s shiny golden colour, rich and oily texture, and fresh complex nose of apricots and citrus are enchanting. The palate is rich and full with flavours of dried fruits, orange peel and spice. The concentrated flavour and sweetness are balanced by crisp acidity.
