2013 was one of those vintages that expresses what makes the Montelena Estate a rarity, even in the Napa Valley. The 2013 vintage was yet another blockbuster for Napa Valley. The estate vineyard’s porous alluvial soils and craggy volcanic terrain soaked up the early winter rains and combined with dry spring weather to induce just enough early stress in the vines to stimulate the development of rich texture and body. The long, warm summer that followed, coupled with good yields, brought each block into balance quickly requiring little intervention and encouraging uniform ripening. The result is an age-worthy wine that showcases the classic balance of Old World structure and New World ripeness.

The fruit from this vintage experienced the best of what this vineyard can offer, and the skilled hands at Chateau Montelena crafted a wine of elegance, structure, and finesse.

“Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate opens with profound black and red currant cordial notes over an undercurrent of Indian spices, chargrill, scorched earth and bay leaves. Medium-bodied with wonderful intensity and depth in the mouth, it has a firm frame of grainy tannins and compelling freshness, finishing long and layered.”

“Montelena’s 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is unctuous, deep and concentrated. A wine of gravitas and power, the 2013 possesses remarkable textural richness, with a demi-glace like sweetness that is unusual for this wine and that lends an exotic feel throughout. The tannins are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit, but they are very much present. Patience will be key. Iron, smoke, tar and licorice are some of the many notes that infuse the voluptuous finish.”

“This was a blockbuster vintage for the Napa Valley, with drought conditions and a long warm summer, but not too much heat stress. The winery shifted from hand to machine sorting and included Petit Verdot to add smoothness. Rich-textured and seamless, the wine brims with Indian spice, smoke, liquorice, earth and fresh berry flavours, as well as a tangy minerality. Like other 2013 Napa Cabernets, it shows depth and power.”

“Winemaker Matt Crafton embraces the winery’s longstanding tradition of elegant Napa Valley Cabernet in this estate wine—a beautiful expression of exotic, savory characteristics wrapped in a seamless texture. Tomato leaf, meat and soy notes underscore deep layers of black pepper, black cherry and cassis, with grippy, dense tannins. Enjoy 2023–2033.”
