“La Guiraude” is a special cuvée produced only in exceptional vintages, after Alain has tasted every barrel. This is a rare and spectacular wine. Composed entirely of organically-grown hand-harvested Syrah from vines over 30-years-old, fruit is whole cluster-fermented in concrete by native yeast, then aged in one to three-year-old French oak.
Alain has proved beyond a doubt that it is possible to make rich wines from the flat land near the Isère River confluence. His concentrated reds demonstrate all that is exciting about the Syrah grape: black fruit, intense aromatics, pepper, and spicy complexity underpinned by crisp acidity and fine tannins. They are difficult to resist young, but patient cellaring for at least five years is well-rewarded.
The 2015 has yet to be reviewed, but the 2013 received the following:
“Inky ruby. Powerful smoke- and spice-accented aromas of fresh blueberry, olive paste and violet carry a smoky mineral overtone. Juicy and focused, showing very good depth and energy to the dark berry and floral pastille flavours, which are sharpened by a jolt of peppery spices. Smoothly pairs power and finesse, and finishes long and smoky, with repeating dark berry character and fine-grained tannins that sneak in late.”
