This Cruz de Piedra red is made entirely of Garnacha from very old bush-pruned vines. Grown through Spain and southern France, this is a versatile variety with great range. Cruz de Piedra’s vineyards in this lesser-known region of Spain, southeast of Rioja, are perched at high altitude, where Garnacha really shines. Most of the winery’s vines are over 50 years old (many reaching 100), thanks to the enormous dedication of generations of wine-growing families in Calatayud.
This is a serious, powerful Garnacha with concentration and purity. The palate feels both bright and lifted without sacrificing density or concentration. It’s a favourite to serve slightly chilled through the summer with cured meats and small plates off the grill that will translate just as well to cozy fireside meals when the seasons turn. It’s undeniably tasty, with plenty of red fruit and blackberry.
