“The 2011 Savennières Clos du Papillon is a rich, fruit intense and powerful, but also very elegant and mineral, perfectly balanced Chenin with everything in place to age superbly. Compared to the 2010 it is quite intense and much fruitier and impetuous. The aromas are more from white- than yellow-fleshed fruits and the freshness, salinity, and transparency are really rare for wines of this fighting weight of 14.5% alcohol. The only danger here is that you drink it quicker than is good for you. The salty aftertaste and the inner harmony here is so absolutely delicious and animating.”

“Unctuous, concentrated and refined, this holds a large core of quince, creamed Anjou pear and white ginger notes in reserve for now, while heather, chamomile, orange blossom and white peach flavors take the lead. When the reserves stretch out and catch up with the floral accents, this will be a pure, precise stunner, with a long life.”

“The vines at Baumard’s 10 acres in the Clos du Papillon are 35 years old, growing in schist, sandstone and sand. They produced an extraordinary 2011, pale in color, deliciously rich in flavor, bursting with quince and kumquat fruit that feels brisk and frisky in its youthful tension. Notes of beeswax and white flowers last in the finish as the wine wraps the palate with its gracious concentration of flavor. A classic, built for years of development, though it’s hard to resist drinking it now.”
