“Certified as a biodynamic wine producer for ten years now, Domaine Vacheron is surely one of the highlights in the Sancerrois. Lead by Jean-Dominique and his cousin Jean-Laurent, the family domaine produces a range of different single vineyard Sancerres in white, red and pink that reflects not just the rich variety of the terroirs in the region, but the concept of the cousins who seem to demonstrate that the Sancerreois is no less fascinating than the Côte d’Or. In fact, the rich and powerful whites (38 of the 50 hectares are planted with Sauvignon Blanc) belong to the best Sancerres you can find, especially when you have the patience to give the crus the time they need to develop.”

Look to Vacheron, consistently one of the region’s notable domaines, for intense, beautifully-layered Sancerre. The soil in this hill-top estate in the eastern part of Sancerre are largely hard and flinty bringing a notable minerality to the finished wine. Fruit is hand-harvested and the wine was fermented by native yeast, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. This Sancerre is renowned for its intense aroma of green fruit and freshly-cut grass. The first taste is dominated by the intensity of the gooseberry fruit until the dense mineral core and subtle vanilla creep in, giving the wine impressive presence. Candied citrus and berry aromas and flavours are accented by toasted grain and pencil shavings. Simply delicious, it lingers nicely on the finish.
The 2016 is a recent release and has yet to be reviewed. The 2015 received the following:
“Jean-Dominique Vacheron’s white 2015 Sancerre shows a very clear and elegant white fruit aroma with elderflowers on the nose. Full-bodied, very elegant and fruit intense, but also with mineral and phenolic grip, it has a long and powerful finish. This is remarkably good, perfectly balanced Sancerre. The 2015 reflects the warm and sunny vintage as well as the elegant and complex Vacheron style. The aromatic aftertaste reveals a nice mango aroma, as well as cassis and refreshing mineral flavors.”
