“Thanks to the softly rolling hills that enclose the area of Panzano, the increased luminosity, and the amphitheater of vineyards known as the Conca d’Oro (or “golden basin”), Panzano has deservedly earned right of recognition. I would argue that it has done more than the other township when it comes to defining its unique geographic wine identity. If the Chianti Classico appellation is eventually divided by township, Panzano should be allowed to stand among them. Not awarding Panzano its own singular identity amounts to a lack of courage and vision in my humble opinion. Among the many excellent estates located in Panzano is Fontodi, one of the finest wine estates in the world.”
Monica Larner on Fontodi, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, April 2017
Fontodi’s Chianti Classico has always represented the winery’s philosophy that quality is of utmost importance. It expresses the estate’s terroir perfectly. Produced with Sangiovese from various vineyards within the property, the wine fermented with indigenous yeast in cool tanks, then matured for 18 months in Troncais and Allier casks. An additional three months in bottle give the finished wine a rounded, full texture.
Fontodi’s reputation as an outstanding Chianti producer is on display in the 2014. This was a challenging vintage in Chianti, cool and damp through the summer – a contrast to the warmer vintages that came before. In well-managed vineyards like Fontodi’s, however, a skilled team can make captivating wines under difficult growing conditions.
“A red with berry, chili powder and spice that follows through to a full body, juicy fruit and a flavorful finish. Fontodi doesn’t miss a stride in this difficult vintage. Excellent. Drink now.”

“Fontodi’s 2014 Chianti Classico is one of the most finessed vintages of this wine in recent memory. The combination of the cool growing conditions and a move toward larger oak casks has resulted in a deep yet translucent wine of notable pedigree and class. There is plenty of the typical Panzano richness, but less of the overt weight that has characterized some recent vintages. 2020-2029.”
