Miljenko “Mike” Grgich has been called “The King of Chardonnay”, and you can taste why in this classically-styled wine.
Chardonnay thrives in Grgich’s American Canyon and Carneros vineyards in the southern tip of Napa Valley, near San Pablo Bay, which spills into the San Francisco Bay. The cool maritime breezes and morning fog allow the grapes to slowly ripen and develop complex flavours while maintaining a pleasing natural acidity that is impossible to achieve in warmer areas. All vineyards are Certified Organic. They are farmed without artificial pesticides or herbicides.
For the third year in a row Napa Valley experienced an exceptional vintage, aided by near drought conditions. Bud break came slightly early and mild temperatures through the growing season helped preserve moisture. July’s relatively high humidity slowed down sugar accumulation to achieve perfect ripeness with lower alcohol. At Grgich, harvest started and ended about two weeks earlier than normal, producing fruit of superb quality
This Chardonnay, fermented with indigenous yeast and aged 10 months in French oak, did not go through malolactic fermentation, preserving its brightness and natural acidity in lieu of smooth, creamy layers. The wine displays ripe peach, mango and tropical fruit flavours, with a base note of minerality. Enjoy with fresh seafood, roasted chicken, grilled pork and creamy cheeses.
The 2014 vintage is a recent release that has yet to be reviewed. The 2013 vintage received the following:
“Bright light gold color. Bright, waxy, smoky spicy aromas and flavors of candle wax, grilled citrus, pickled fruits, and rice pudding with a soft, tangy, dry-yet-fruity medium-full body and a tingling, interesting, medium-length kiwi and lemon sorbet, spiced nuts, and honeyed herbs finish with fine, crunchy tannins and light oak. A toasty, vibrantly delicious Chardonnay for all occasions.”
