Grgich’s Zinfandel is sourced from one vineyard, a 34-acre parcel above Calistoga that is the warmest of their vineyard sites. With its northeast exposure, the sloping landscape catches abundant morning light, but is shaded from the hot, late afternoon sun. Aspect, in combination with the vineyard’s gravelly loam soils, makes this the perfect spot to grow heat-loving Zinfandel. Like all of Grgich’s vineyards, it is farmed naturally and Certified Organic.

The winery practices minimal-intervention winemaking, fermenting the grapes with indigenous yeast at moderate temperatures that allow the wine to develop flavour and colour from extended skin contact. In this case, Zinfandel was co-fermented with a touch of Petite Sirah to add complexity and structure, then pressed off skins early to retain fresh fruit character. The wine matured in large oak casks for 15 months so that the toasted, spicy flavours were well-integrated, but not overwhelming.

“This is an exuberantly fruity, spicy and robust wine, speckled with 2% Petite Sirah. Dark and full of red berry flavor, the palate is dusted in brown sugar and black pepper. Ripe and concentrated, it drinks smooth and elegant despite its serious power.”
