LCBO Vintages Release
This wine captures the savvy customer’s expectations of classic Sonoma County Pinot. The nose has notes of ripe elderberry, black cherry, wild rose, and spicy cola, with slightly earthy undertones. Hints of creamy vanilla and toffee from French oak barrels lend support with without overpowering the juicy, fruit-forward palate.
Carefully chosen from various Russian River Valley and Carneros vineyards, this wine’s key components are grown metres from the river itself in the Ricioli and Foppiano vineyards, long-time sources of fruit for Martin Ray. The wine also incorporates fruit from select vineyards around the estate on Laguna Road and Sangiacomo vineyard in the Carneros appellation.
2015, a drought year in California, surprised winemakers with a wonderful vintage. The unseasonably warm, dry winter led to an early spring that forced vines into bud break during peak frost season. Fortunately, the spring weather stayed mild during fruit set and slipped into a relatively warm summer. The early harvest that followed was unprecedented! Although the crop was smaller than the winery had seen in several years, the outstanding quality of the fruit and wines cannot be understated.
Grapes were fermented by vineyard plot in small open-top fermenters with gentle punch-downs. The fermentations were carefully maintained at moderate temperatures, then basket-pressed and transferred to barrels for malolactic fermentation. Lots were aged for 11 months in new French oak barrels and more nuanced one- to two-year-old barrels.
