LCBO Vintages Classics Release
Named in honour of Paul Hobb’s great-grandfather, the five-acre Edward James Estate Vineyard showcases the growing conditions that make Russian River Valley AVA an optimal place to produce high-quality Chardonnay. The soil here is threaded with sandy loam and Goldridge soil, the hallmark soils in this neck of Sonoma County. This this wine amongst the best of California’s cool-climate Chardonnays.
The excellent 2014 growing season allowed the Chardonnay grapes to ripen evenly through the year. Dry winter and spring conditions limited canopy vigour, and a warm summer without disruptive heat spikes resulted in grapes with balanced acidity.
Hand-harvested fruit, picked at night, was whole-cluster pressed while fruit was still cool from the field. The wine was barrel-fermented by indigenous yeast, resulting in a complex, full-bodied Chardonnay. The wine went through spontaneous malolactic fermentation while in barrel, then remained in French oak (65% new) for 15 months until it was bottled, unfined and unfiltered.
The terroir of the vineyard and the talent of the winemaker have translated into a complex white wine. This pale, straw-hued Chardonnay shows aromas of baking spices, Anjou pear, white peach, and ginger. Concentrated, rich, and vibrant on the palate, layers of juicy fruit are underpinned by refreshing acidity and a long finish.
“Tight and serious white with full body, phenolic tension and lots of cream and cedar character and a minerally. Superb white. Drink or hold.”
