Quintessa’s winemakers received a welcome respite for the 2015 growing season. After being struck with a powerful earthquake in 2014, the season began with ample rains that were a welcome sight after three years of drought. Warm late winter temperatures prompted an early budbreak and ultimately one of the earliest harvests on record for Quintessa. Overall, yields were low with outstanding quality as harvest began in the early morning of September 2nd and continued on to September 30th. A whirlwind of activity then followed, producing a classic Quintessa vintage of opulence, texture, and length. This year is truly a collector’s vintage for its low yields and exceptional quality; the 2015 Quintessa will age gracefully for many years to come.
Quintessa is always deep and thoughtfully made. The estate vineyard was designed to take advantage of every feature and microclimate created by the property’s five hills, lake, riverbed, and surrounding forest. From the beginning, it has been farmed organically. Most of the estate’s vines are now 27 years old and mature enough to handle challenging weather conditions when they arise. Every block – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carmenere – was harvested in sections so that fruit could be picked at the moment it showed its best character.
“Aromas of blue fruits, blackberries, tile and lead pencil. Full body, firm tannins and a fresh, bright finish. Layered and intense with white-pepper and salt undertones. Love the finish to this racy young wine. Beautiful blue fruits! Drink in 2020 and onwards. From biodynamic grapes.”

“Deep garnet-purple coloured, the 2015 Proprietary Red Wine has a very deep purple colour and notes of crushed rocks, dusty earth and iron ore over blackcurrants and black cherries, plus hints of tapenade, bay leaves, underbrush and chargrill. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is bursting with densely packed, youthful black fruits, framed by finely grained tannins and refreshing acidity, finishing long and mineral laced. This was tasted as a barrel sample.”

“The 2015 Quintessa is an absolutely sensational showing which is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenère that spent 21 months in 100% French oak (75% new). It instantly begins with aromas of ripe black currants, blackberries and red cherries, which are woven together with fresh florals, spices, dusty minerals as well as suggestions of graphite and dark chocolate shavings all taking shape. On the palate this is full-bodied with a lovely opulent mouthfeel, displaying outstanding depth and concentration. It continues to impress with its remarkable overall balance and finesse which provides a sense of elegance as it glides seamlessly into the long, lustrous finish. This is the first vintage winemaker Rebekah Wineburg has managed all aspects of the wine making process from vineyard to bottle. The result is nothing short of an utterly fascinating wine, which will continue to drink beautifully for decades.”
