Quintessa’s winemakers are always attuned to the happenings of nature, but the 2014 vintage stood out: harvest began with a 6.2 magnitude earthquake that showed Mother Nature’s power and grace. It shook Napa Valley, which was in its third year of severe drought. The quake loosened groundwater deep below the valley floor, causing streams that had been dry to run for the first time in years.
The wineglasses at Quintessa didn’t so much as shake. It was an exceptional vintage, a growing season with no heat waves and a bountiful harvest, and the scare meant that Napa Valley had a particularly strong sense of community. Quintessa is always deep and thoughtfully made. The estate vineyard was designed to take advantage of every feature and microclimate created by the property’s five hills, lake, riverbed, and surrounding forest. From the beginning, it has been farmed organically. Most of the estate’s vines are now 27 years old and mature enough to handle challenging weather conditions when they arise. Every block – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carmenere – was harvested in sections so that fruit could be picked at the moment it showed its best character.
“The 2014 vintage heralds a milestone: Quintessa’s 20th anniversary release. It was also the first vintage that saw Quintessa’s winemaker ferment juice on skins in small new French oak. Rarely do you find a wine that is seamless from start to finish. Dark and rich, it wine expresses harmony between fruit and earth. Inviting aromas of fresh cherry and blackberry are layered with notes of violets, graphite, and cedar spice. The palate is rich and concentrated, finishing with elegant, well-balanced tannins. This wine simply exudes warmth. Aromas of spearmint, sweet tobacco, cigars and blackcurrants follow through to a medium to full body, very polished and refined tannins and an intense finish. Extremely fine and long. Savory. Extremely long finish. Biodynamically grown.”

“This is probably the best set of wines I have yet tasted from the Huneeus family, who own this beautiful property off the Silverado Trail south of the Meadowood Resort. The three red wines are represented best by the flagship wine, the 2014 Quintessa Proprietary Red from their vineyards in Rutherford. A beautiful floral, black raspberry and blackcurrant nose soars from this dense ruby/purple wine. Medium-bodied, beautifully rich and layered, the emphasis is on discreet yet intense flavors, power allied with elegance, and wonderfully supple, lush tannins. This wine has great balance, purity, and presence on the palate and should evolve beautifully for two decades or more.”
