The 2014 Shafer One Point Five is a bold, expansive Stags Leap District wine with soft tannins and abundant fruit that is approachable when young, yet capable of aging gracefully. The wine’s name references the partnership between father and winery founder John Shafer and his son Doug, who took on the role of winemaker in 1983. Their working relationship has lasted for over 30 years. “One Point Five” was coined to mean “a generation and a half” to reflect the overlap in generations, as opposed the the traditional second-generation winery story.
From the first vintage, “One Point Five” has consistently reflected the Shafer style and commitment to quality. 2014 was the third in a string of ideal vintages, warm and sun-soaked from spring through early autumn. Consistent daytime heat and cool evenings were the signature of a model growing season that produced fruit with concentration, rich colour, and enticing aromatics.
This wine combines fruit from two Stags Leap District sites: Shafer’s hillside estate vineyard and the “Borderline” vineyard, located just south of the winery. Approximately 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, with a small quantity of Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, it was aged for approximately 20 months in new French oak barrels.

“The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five offers up scents of lavender, cloves, menthol, licorice, spice and graphite. Savoury, delineated and tightly wound, the 2014 is a picture perfect example of the vintage. Winemaker Elias Fernandez adds that the drought was more severe in 2014 than it was in 2013. This is another strong showing from Shafer.”

The estate was founded by John Shafer and run with great precision by himself and more recently by his son Doug and Elias Fernandez. The team has been working together for 38 years since the first vintage in 1978. Six years earlier in 1972, John Shafer bought the property and established the vineyard in the hillsides of Stags Leap. They produce about 30,000 cases of wine – all of it noteworthy. Their Cabernet Sauvignon is true first-growth quality. The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five shows beautiful purity, not the weight, profound depth and structure of the 2013, but it is still medium to full-bodied, elegant, graceful and a classic example of the Stags Leap appellation. Drink it over the next 15+ years.”
