“Terra Costantino boasts the lucky advantage of having Consulting Enologist Luca D’Attoma on their winemaking team. This Tuscan perfectionist brings his maniacal attention to detail to a faraway volcano where nothing is predictable or easy. The estate farms a single, 7.5-hectare parcel located 450 to 550 meters above sea level. Half the vineyard is planted to Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, with three hectares of white grapes, Carricante and Catarratto.”
Monica Larner on Terra Costantino, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Aug 2017
Delicious, yes. But if a wine could be intelligent, Terra Costantino’s ‘deAetna’ would wear that description well too. An elegant, versatile wine from one of the boutique producers responsible for taking Sicily’s wines from inconsequential to sought-after over the past decade. A blend dominated by Carricante, one of the island’s indigenous grapes. Generally, Carricante brings a balance of grainy grounded minerality, assertive citrus acidity and white flower aromatics to play.
Fruit comes from the Terra Costantino estate’s carefully tended Certified Organic vineyard on the southeast slope of Mount Etna. Grapes are harvested by hand, and wine ages for several months in stainless steel prior to bottling.
The 2016 is a new release that has yet to be rated. The 2015 vintage received the following:
“The pear and stone character with hints of flint are impressive. Medium body, some phenolic texture. Flavorful finish. Drink now. Made from organic grapes.”
