Viñedos y Bodegas Muñoz, a winery with a long family tradition, is a benchmark among the modern wineries of La Mancha DO. Here, in central Spain, southeast of Madrid, agronomist and winemaker Bienvenido Muñoz Pollo produces extraordinarily concentrated and aromatic wines in the village of Nobleja. Bienvenido is the third generation of a family that is deeply involved in the winery’s operations. He is the recipient of the Consejo Regulador de la DO Mancha’s “Master of Wine” award, a prestigious title awarded to the region’s highest tier of wine specialists.
The rolling century-old vineyards here grow in shallow, mineral-rich calcareous-clay soil. Muñoz works with Tempranillo and Garnacha from vines no less than 40 years of age, as well as international varietals like Merlot, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Fruit benefits from the continental climate and notable temperature swings from hot to cold, day to night, and summer to winter. The intense sun that beats down through long, dry summers results in wine with vibrant, ripe fruit flavours. Muñoz is a long-time pioneer in La Mancha, an early adopter of modern winemaking tools that have notably improved the quality and longevity of the region’s wines.
