William Bitner Browne sounds like the kind of guy you’d go out of your way to grab a drink with. Oh, the stories he’d tell! This super-achiever entered college at 16. While studying in Bordeaux, he launched a love affair with fine wine. Fresh out of Harvard Law, the honours graduate was faced with the opening salvos of the second World War. His overseas service as a Counter Intelligence Task Force officer in Metz, Germany extended to the Korean conflict. Bitner channeled his self-professed intensity and restlessness into a lifetime endeavouring to be a service to all, and racked up a few adventures along the way. A man in motion, fine wine was a grounding influence and a great source of enjoyment. He shared that joy with his grandson, Andrew, just as Andrew was starting a career in the wine industry.
Bitner was the inspiration for Andrew’s endeavour: Browne Family Vineyards. His grandfather’s integrity and excellence are the standards upon which he makes wine. Andrew leads Precept Wines, and Browne is in effect a “winery within a winery”. This is honest, hands-on winemaking. Here in the Walla Walla, fruit is sorted by hand, fermented in small open-top fermentors, and pressed using a small-lot basket press. The result is premium Washington wine, made with utmost quality and enjoyment in mind.
