Domaine des Baumard
Domaine des Baumard is known for producing some of the greatest Chenin Blanc in the world. The Domaine has been in the Baumard family since the early 1600s, and was passed from father Jean Baumard to his son Florent around 20 years ago. Where Jean had the mind of a scientist, Florent brings a more soulful, artistic approach. When he isn’t kite-surfing on the Loire, he’s making cerebral reference-point wines that crackle when young and mature with grace.
Organic vineyard practices and minimal intervention in the cellar (strictly stainless steel ferment across the board) let the patchwork soils of Savennieres and Coteaux du Layon shine. You’ll notice that all wines on offer, except the sparkling wines, are bottled under Stelvin. This is classic Florent Baumard, progressive and pragmatic: Florent knows these are wines to age for decades, so in 2005, he swapped out cork entirely to minimize oxidation and to eliminate cork taint.

Hand-harvested Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay pulled from 35-year old vines. Whole-cluster pressed, fermented in stainless steel, matured nine months “sur lie” before bottling.
A nervy, dry table or aperitif wine with a chalky mineral edge. Precise and tense with notes of pear, green apple, and honey. A pleasure to drink. Florent recommends you to “always have one bottle in the fridge”.
“Le Logis” Anjou 2016

Hand-harvested Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, 35-year old vines grown in soil rich in shale and volcanic rock. Aged nine months in stainless steel.
“Le Logis” is named for Le Logis de la Giraudière, the 18th century manor house where the Baumard family established their estate in 1959. Produced only in exceptional vintages, this is expressive, elegant Loire Cabernet Franc. Fragrant, lightly spicy, firm, and dry with notes of ripe red and black fruit. Plays well with others.

Dry and refreshing, with a spicy blood-orange and cranberry nose.
Savennières “Clos St Yves”

Hand-harvested Chenin Blanc from 35-year old vines from the Clos St. Yves vineyard on the slope of Savennières, between the prized Clos du Papillon and Roche aux Moines vineyards.
Multiple passes are made through the vineyard in order to pick grapes at perfect maturity. Whole-cluster pressed, fermented in stainless steel, matured nine months sur lie before bottling.
Pure and crystalline while young, with notes of bitter almond, honeysuckle, pear, and driving minerality, top vintages of Clos St. Yves age for up to 20 years and emerge as spectacular mature white wines.
Savennières “Clos du Papillon” 2015

Named for its butterfly shape, the Clos du Papillon vineyard produces some of the most concentrated, compelling wines in Savennières. The Baumard family owns the largest share (and the best parcels) of Clos du Papillon.

“Le Petit Paon” 2016

Consider Le Paon (the peacock) the assertive young cousin in Florent Baumard’s portfolio of sweet wines. Le Paon is a bit of an insider’s wine: Florent calls it a “secret blend”, made with fruit from multiple tries and terroirs. Intense acidity and bright citrus, stone fruit, and marmalade notes bring balance to this layered sweet wine. Fresh, perfumed, and ready to drink.
Coteaux du Layon “Carte D’Or” 2018

Old-vine Chenin Blanc harvested in multiple passes through Baumard’s vineyards in Coteaux du Layon.

Richer than Carte d’Or. As concentrated as Le Petit Paon, but more refined and precise. Racy and exotic with an endless finish, this bounces when young and glides with maturity.

Quarts de Chaume 2015

Baumard owns 15 acres of the 110-acre Quarts de Chaume vineyard in Anjou, where vines grow on steep, exposed terraces along the southeastern Layon River. In 2011, Quarts de Chaume was recognized as the first official “Grand Cru” of the Loire Valley.
Baumard’s Quarts de Chaume is arguably the greatest wine of the Loire. It has a rare elegance and texture that balance an equally impressive richness and cleansing acidity.
“Waves of creamed Jonagold apple, Cavaillon melon, mirabelle plum, mango and white peach flavours provide thrilling range, while flashes of honeysuckle and verbena add detail and focus throughout. Cremant de Loire Rosé

A specialty of the Domaine, produced since 1957. Hand-harvested Cabernet Franc and Grolleau from 35-year old vines grown in the Crémant de Loire AOC, which covers Anjou and Touraine. Whole-cluster pressed, traditional method fermentation with at least 24 months sur lie in bottle.
A very pale rosé (almost a Blancs de Noir). Generous red summer fruit, a direct and vigorous in style with a fine mousse and creamy mineral-driven finish.
Cremant de Loire “Cuvée Millésimée” Brut 2014

Here is another sparkling wine produced since 1957. Hand-harvested Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc from 35-year old vines grown in the Crémant de Loire AOC. A selection of the vintage’s best fruit is whole-cluster pressed, followed by traditional method fermentation and four years “sur lie” in bottle.
Elegant and complex, the most refined of the Domaine’s sparkling wines. Mineral, orchard fruit, and citrus, with a long, gently toasty finish.
