I can sing praises for all of our producer partners and I can tell you the story of each and every wine we sell, but we’ve got some big news and I think it’s best if you hear it from someone else….

The Produttori del Barbaresco formed in 1894 with nine families contributing fruit to the local Cantine Sociali. It closed during the wars, but opened again in 1958 with 19 local families providing the Nebbiolo grapes
Today 50 families contribute their Nebbiolo crop, and the incomparable Gianni Testa guides the wine to the bottle. Collectively, they control 16 percent of Barbaresco’s vineyards, 80% of their wine carries the Barbaresco DOCG designation, and they produce nine Cru Riservas when the quality of the vintage allows, as it did in 2014.
We are lucky to have been offered small quantities of six Riservas, and we are taking reservations now. All come as cases of 6 bottles. No payment is needed up front. This offer closes on April 1st, or as stock allows. The wines will begin to arrive 16 weeks later. Quantities are limited and we strive to distribute the cases as fairly as possible.

The Asili vineyard grows the representative “elegant” Barbaresco, according to Produttori Director Aldo Vacca, with ripe but fine tannins, which, while appearing to drink sternly in its youth, unfold to release an elegant intensity over time.
The 2011 vintage of this wine earned the #5 spot in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2016.
“The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is somber and dense in this vintage. Silky Asili tannins bring out the wine’s voluptuousness and soft contours. Dark red cherry and plum fruit show some of the typical Asili sensuality, but the 2014 is a powerhouse that is going to need time to come around. Montefico is an amphitheater shaped vineyard facing the village of Neive and the Montestefano Cru. The Nebbiolo grown here ripens slowly, providing balanced fruit, and the wines made here always drink with richness and grace.
“The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is another of the more inward, reticent wines in the range. A core of huge dark fruit virtually covers the beams of incisive tannin that are such a signature of this Barbaresco site. Dark red plum, chalk, cured meats, plum, iron, smoke, leather and licorice confer attractive elements of savouriness to this potent, structured Barbaresco.” 96 points, Antonio Galloni vinous.com, Oct 2018
Montestefano is part of the same ridge as Montefico, and Moncagotta, (the three M’s). It is steep, south facing and high in calcium. Calcium in the soil helps the plants develop better structure including larger, riper tannins. This is the most “Barolo-like” of the Riservas, with the darkest fruit, a smokey note to that red fruitiness and the most palate weight.
“One of the many highlights in this range, the Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is superb. A big enrobing wine, the Montestefano wraps around the palate with stunning depth. Today, the Montestefano is utterly embryonic, and yet it exudes depth, resonance and pure class. The Montestefano is one of the more complete wines in the range because of the way it deftly balances fruit intensity and structure. “This first-rate Barbaresco cooperative has released a superb set of Riservas, and this is among the very best. It’s dense and solid on the nose, infused with cherry and raspberry fruit. Suave and full-bodied, it shows impressive weight and depth, with ripe tannins that contribute texture. The finish is spicy, displaying drive, finesse and length. “The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is bright and piercing, as it so often is, and yet it also has more than enough fruit to fill out its mid-weight, energetic frame. Pine, mint, crushed rocks and sweet red plum build into the huge, piercing finish. The Ovello is another wine in this range that demands patience. Even in the early going it is super impressive. The 2014 is an unusually dense, packed Ovello. It should be terrific in another few years’ time.” 95 points, Antonio Galloni vinous.com, Oct 2018
“My preview tasting of the 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello reveals a wine of beautiful intensity and impressive potential. The cooler 2014 summer season has helped to develop greater acidity that holds the fiber of this wine tightly together. The 2013 vintage is velvetier in comparison, with looser stitching in its fiber. Instead, the 2014 vintage shows a very polished, firm and tonic personality. I tasted this sample after bottling, but the wine will hit the market toward the end of this year. This Barbaresco Riserva will require extra cellar time to relax and unwind.” (93-95) points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, June 2018
The Pora vineyard sustains a unique microclimate due to its proximity to the Tanaro River. The vineyard is situated on a beautiful hill with south and west exposures. Because it sits relatively close to the valley floor, Pora is relatively warm in the early morning hours, then breezy with slightly higher humidity through the afternoon. Soil fertility is slightly higher here on the plain, and this creates a wine of gentle character, with soft tannins and a youthful, fruit-forward nose.
“The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is a dark, sensual beauty. Deeply spiced and balsamic, with tremendous textural richness, the Pora is utterly beguiling. I can’t remember a Pora with this much depth, textural resonance and brooding intensity. The 2014 needs at least a few years to be at its best, but it is superb even in the early going. I won’t be surprised if the 2014 turns out to be better than this note suggests.” 94 points, Antonio Galloni vinous.com, Oct 2018
“Although Pora is a relatively low-elevation site and can produce broad wines, Produttori’s growers own almost half the cru, so they can select the best grapes for this Riserva. It’s beautifully perfumed, with pure raspberry fruit. The palate is streamlined and poised, with a sleek texture and a remarkable purity of flavour, yet it doesn’t lack structure and its fine acidity gives it drive and persistence. The Rabajà vineyard is located on a peak between two ridges that form the heart of the wine-growing region of Barbaresco. The first ridge is composed of relatively loose soil; the second ridge is composed of more compact soil. The two soil types find a balance in the Rabajà cru, considered to be a vineyard that produces very balanced and harmonious wines with elegance and power.

“The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is powerful, dense and explosive, with tremendous intensity of fruit and structure. The Rabajà is dark and potent – as all these wines are – but the tannins and acids give the wine considerable tension and energy. The Rabajà is a powerful, towering wine endowed with massive structure and intensity to burn.
