You could argue that, with its minimal-intervention approach and Certified Biodynamic vineyard, all of Alpamanta’s wines are “natural” wines. Breva certainly is. Each bottle contains a layer of silky-fine sediment. Give it a shake to stir the wine to a cloudy vibrant deep pink. If you’ve had the pleasure of sampling a young wine unfined from the tank, you’ll see that the Breva looks similar, quite a bit like a tank sample.
In a sense, that’s the essence of the wine. Hand-harvested Syrah was picked in small bins and carried to the winery, where it was pressed to egg-shaped concrete tanks. Fermented by indigenous yeast and simply racked off the coarsest lees, the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
In the glass, it looks like a summer evening sunset over the lake. (Perfect cottage wine!) On the palate, it’s rich-textured and zesty, all layered white flowers and lemon drops. Delightful.
