LCBO Vintages Release
Ancient Peaks’ Margarita Vineyard is renowned for producing one of Paso Robles’ most acclaimed Zinfandels. Nestled into the rugged Santa Lucia Mountain range just 22 km from the Pacific Ocean, the new Santa Margarita Ranch AVA stands alone as the southernmost vineyard in the region.
Mountain peaks act as a gateway, drawing in cool marine air that creates a unique microclimate and extends the growing season. The tectonic forces that created the peaks also unearthed a rare diversity of soils, including volcanic rock and shale.
Here, Zinfandel, which has been a cornerstone variety of Paso Robles for more than 100 years, achieves a rare balance of robust flavors, uncommon depth, and elegant structure.
The 2017 harvest yielded beautifully balanced fruit. Grapes from three separate vineyard blocks contributed to the character and complexity of the finished wine. After fermentation, the lots were racked to French, American, and Hungarian oak barrels (25% new oak), and aged for 18 months prior to blending and bottling. Small lots of Petit Verdot (5%) and Petite Sirah (5%) were incorporated into the final blend for colour, depth, and structure.
The 2017 Zinfandel presents bright boysenberry aromas with hints of sandalwood and vanilla. The juicy, jammy wine is loaded with generous flavours of wild raspberry, black cherry, plum, mocha, and cedar. Spicy black pepper notes join mouthwatering acidity on a beautifully balanced finish.
“From the Santa Margarita AVA in southern Paso Robles, 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean, comes a distinctive zinfandel with quite lifted peppery, herbal aromas suggesting the cooler sub-region. It also has lifted blackcurrant, floral notes. It is full bodied, quite intense and intriguing with this odd sweet-tart ying-yang on the palate, plus warming alcohol. Tannins are quite mild. A wine for those who like intrigue. The length is excellent.”
