“Ben Smith continues to make top notch Bordeaux blends from Red Mountain. His two reserve wines are the Bel Canto and Camerata, and these see a slightly longer elevage in oak. His two single vineyards are the Tapteil and the Ciel du Cheval. They’re all well worth your time and money. A significantly different blend from the 2012, which was over 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2013 Camerata checks in as 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot, which like the Bel Canto spent 23 months in 50% new French oak. Possessing a fabulous bouquet of black currants, toasted spice, licorice and wild herbs, this full-bodied 2013 is concentrated, incredibly elegant and textured, with ripe tannin and a balanced, layered style that will evolve gracefully. It should be at its best from 2020-2033.”

“(This wine previously included much more Cabernet Sauvignon but that variety “had the least energy in 2013,” according to Smith; aged in 50% new oak, mostly Taransaud, Darnajou and Sylvain): Deep ruby-red. Aromas of black cherry, cassis, licorice and graphite. Tangy, penetrating dark raspberry and cassis flavors show superb inner-mouth lift. At once tighter and more precise than the Bel Canto, but mintier, more medicinal and backward, and not showing that wine’s sweetness in the early going. Best today on the long, rising finish, but the slightly rough tannins call for patience.”
