Castello di Volpaia is a winery cleverly hidden in a historic hillside Tuscan town, a historic walled commune that dates back to the 1100’s. Tanks are tucked in crumbling churches, barrel halls lie below stone piazzas, and a subterranean “vinoduct” flows underneath it all. It is one if Italy’s magical places, not to mention one of Tuscany’s best producers of Chianti Classico. Volpaia’s wines consistently make Wine Spectator’s list of the “Top 100 Wines of the Year”. This is no small feat.

Volpaia’s vineyards have been farmed organically for decades. Each vineyard is harvested and vinified separately. The winery recently invested in new cellar equipment that has enabled them to achieve better extraction of colour, flavour, and soft tannins. The 2017 incorporates fruit from vineyards that have been replanted with improved rootstocks and carefully selected clones. This vintage reveals an attractive, youthful black cherry colour with aromas of spice and sour cherry. The palate opens with nicely extracted ripe fruit and mellow tannins, and finishes with harmonious balance.

“Fine wine, a genuine success for the vintage from high elevation vineyards in Radda. Volpaia’s ’17 Annatta is clean, pure, red fruit-scented and savoury in the classic Sangiovese style. The palate shows a touch of reduction (the house style) which needs to blow off, but the sapidity and concentration are impressive, the succulent, salty acids and the refined, fine-grained tannins are immediately appealing. Excellent length. Tasted February 2019.”

“Despite overall high altitudes at Volpaia, some of the lower lying vineyards were damaged by the late April frost. Along with the drought conditions, this resulted in a reduction of 30-35% of the estate’s average production. Up front raspberry notes are joined by a touch of mint which adds intrigue. This gains some definition as it sits in the glass and palate is juicy with a supple texture and balanced ripeness. It has enough structure to carry it for five years. 2019 – 2024”
