“It’s no coincidence that some of the most celebrated winemakers in Piedmont – such as Gaja, Giacosa and Conterno – own vineyards in Serralunga, even though their wineries are based elsewhere. Seen by consumers as the most formidable of wines because of their intense tannic structure, Serralunga Barolos are regarded with awe by insiders.”

Stephen Brook on Serralunga, Decanter, Nov 2014

“These are some of the best – maybe the best – Barolos I have tasted from Davide Rosso. The 2016’s have a level of transparency and finesse I don’t recall seeing in the past. The 2016 Barolos spent about 25 days on the skins with pumpovers, with one delestage, and malolactic fermentation in either steel or cement. The Barolos were racked into cask the following spring after a natural decantation, where they spent three years in wood.”

Antonio Galloni on Giovanni Rosso Barolo,, Oct 2020

Giovanni Rosso farms some of the Comune di Serralunga’s most historically important sites. The fruit for this wine comes from Costa Bella, south-facing at the northern end of the Comune; Broglio, sandy, east-facing in the heart of the heart of Serralunga; Sorano, clay-rich and east-facing; and Meriame, a recent acquisition with soil rich in limestone. Site-specific knowledge earned over the past century pays off in wines that harmoniously balance the unique qualities of Nebbiolo from each vineyard. The plots are managed according to organic growing practices, and maintained and harvested by hand.

Following harvest in mid-October, the wine was slowly fermented over 25 days in cement tanks by native yeast. Following fermentation, the wine aged in large French oak casks for 18 to 36 months, depending on the vineyard of origin, before it was bottled unfiltered.

Concentrated, bright garnet red in the glass, the nose is classic Serralunga: violet, rose, and black fruit with notes of cocoa, coffee, and liquorice. The palate is savoury and juicy with wild berry flavours, earthy overtones, a silky mouthfeel, and fine tannins that ease through a long finish.

“Iris, woodland-berry and pine-forest aromas shape the nose. On the focused, vibrant palate, mint and star anise notes accent a core juicy Marasca cherry. Taut polished tannins and bright acidity provide balance and a firm lithe structure.”
