Grgich’s Yountville vineyard forms the heart of the winery’s Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, with grapes from the estate’s Rutherford and Calistoga vineyards rounding out the blend. All three vineyards are farmed without artificial pesticides or herbicides, and are Certified Organic. The result is a full-bodied, elegant Cabernet Sauvignon with pure flavours and a pronounced sense of place.
Grgich Hills believes in minimal-intervention winemaking, fermenting the grapes with indigenous yeast at moderate temperatures that allow the wine to develop nuanced flavour and deep colour from extended skin contact. Each lot is aged separately for several months, then blended to create a wine that is more complex than the individual parts. After blending, the wine spends another 18 months in barrel to fully harmonize before bottling. The nose is complex, with layers of black fruit, leather, and violets that carry through to the palate and linger on the finish. Herbal and elegant with a rich mouthfeel, this is a Cabernet that would love a rack of lamb or roast duck as much as a good grilled steak.
“This wine shows the beauty of Napa Valley Cabernet. Not bigger, but just a more muscular style of Cabernet Sauvignon than is the norm, the 2013 Grgich Hills Estate Cabernet Sauvignon has extraordinary finesse. It’s truly an iron fist in a velvet glove. It conveys a gorgeous minerality, almost a hint of tarriness wrapped with supple, fine tannins. It has a Pauillac-like power for those who like comparisons with Bordeaux. But, indeed, this is Napa Valley Cabernet at its best with plenty of dark fruit and herbal flavors to enhance its mineral-like feel. Long and balanced, Grgich Hills Estate has created the paradox of a wine that is delicious for drinking now with a lamb chops, but will evolve and develop beautiful over the next decade or two.”

“A wonderful display of a classically-styled Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2013 from Grgich Hills opens with pretty aromas of blackberries and currants woven together with spices, pencil shavings, dusty minerals along with hints of dried sage and floral which all come together beautifully. This is full-bodied, yet remarkably refined with silky tannins, and outstanding structure and precision. This should continue to develop nicely over the next decade. Readers who enjoy a traditional style Napa Valley Cabernet will love the 2013 from Grgich Hills.”

“Very pure, keenly focused Cabernet fruit sits at the heart of this tight, yet varietally fluent youngster and is joined by a careful complement of supportive oak. The wine is fully ripe without tipping to excess, and, while its integral tannins and firming acidity work to limit its accessibility at the moment, they provide a fine backbone for ageing, and there is no question but that this one will evolve very nicely over the next six to eight years.”

“Grgich Hills farms 62 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit verdot at the north end of Yountville, on either side of Highway 29. Those organically farmed vines form the basis of this wine, with additional fruit from estate-grown vines in Rutherford and Calistoga. It has the fresh tannins of the 2013 vintage, firm and tight, their power shadowing the fruit in notes of cherry skin and bitter chocolate. Give this time to evolve.”
