Twenty years ago, the Wawerner Goldberg (“Golden Mountain”) region was almost unheard of in discussions of Riesling production. Over the years, however, it has developed something of a reputation for consistently producing grapes of quality equal to that of the famous vineyards of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer valleys. By midday, the sun shines almost vertically on the Goldberg, providing perfect ripening conditions. Careful pruning and low yields cultivated by Weingut Johann Peter Mertes intensify the wine’s reflection of terroir. The wine shines with vibrant acidity and slate-rich minerality.
