In 1970, Henri Ramonteu took over his family’s cattle farm, sold the livestock, planted down his first vines by the foothills of the Pyrenees in Monein, and started Domaine Cauhapé.
Today, Cauhapé is widely considered the benchmark estate of the region. 47 hectares of sustainably farmed vineyards are planted on southeast facing slopes with Petit Manseng, Gros Manseng and Courbu as well as lesser known indigenous varieties such as Camaralet and Lauzet. The predominantly clay soils have excellent water retention properties, protecting vines from hydric stress in the hot and dry summer months.
Henri is not only the owner and winemaker of the Domaine, but also its label artist. Driven by his motto: ”Details make perfection, but perfection is never a detail”, Henri strives to make the best wines every vintage. Cauhapé wines are fruity, pure, and immensely complex.
