Bodegas Vallobera

Rioja

Bodegas Vallobera is the personal project of Javier San Pedro Rández, a self-made winemaker with more than 30 years of experience. The San Pedro family owns some of the most impressive vineyards in Rioja, on the sloping southern foothills of the Sierra Cantabria. The Cantabrian Range forms the shoulders of northern Spain, stretching from the Pyrenees west parallel to the coast. Here, the family also owns Rioja Alavesa’s oldest Tempranillo vineyard, Vallobera, which for some years produced fruit for the region’s best wines. It was Javier San Pedro who dared to produce wines under the family’s name, and under the name of its most famous vineyard, in 1992.

The winery’s vineyard holdings, 110 hectares in total, are perched in a privileged spot in Rioja’s Ebro Valley, 700 metres above sea level. One of the highest vineyard sites in the region, Tempranillo, Viura, and Graciano grow in small plots on chalky clay-limestone soil. This is an ambitious winery project with a promising future.

“For me, the best part of winemaking is the vineyard. When making high-personality wines, vineyards are essential. I still remember when bottling my first wine, my father and my grandfather used to say: ‘Javi, con esos vinos te vas morir de hambre; tienen demasiada personalidad!’ (Javi, you’ll die of hunger with these wines. They have too much personality!)”
