Calera

Central Coast

In 1975, a passion for Burgundy-style Pinot Noir led Josh Jensen to take the leap and buy a secluded property (an old limekiln) in the Gavilan Mountains, east of the town of Salinas. He believed that limestone-laden soils were essential to great Burgundy, where the greatest domains have grown grapes in limestone soils for centuries.

He later expanded the estate to six vineyards, adding Viognier and Chardonnay. Each vineyard is renowned for producing wines of exceptional purity and elegance. and was an important player in the creation of the Mount Harlan AVA. He later on became one of the Central Coast’s best-known Pinot Noir producers, and is regarded as quite the pioneer for luxury Pinot Noir in California.

In 2017, Napa-Valley based Duckhorn Wine Company purchased Calera, with the winery, tasting room and 85 acres of vineyards.
