Château Fortia

Southern Rhône

Château Fortia holds an important place in the history of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It was here that Baron Le Roy de Boiseaumarie was instrumental in the establishment of the Appellation Contrôlée system. Since Bruno Le Roy took over in 1994 and engaged the well-known Cornas oenologist Jean-Luc Colombo as winemaker, Château Fortia is back on form. This is one of the few Châteauneuf-du-Papes that contains a high proportion of Syrah, usually 40%. As a result, these wines a longer than average life.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is considered by many to be the crown jewel of the southern Rhône Valley. Located on the left bank of the Rhône River, vineyards benefit from a warm Mediterranean climate and diverse soil types, making it possible to cultivate many different grapes. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is famous for having 13 permitted grape varieties, with Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah being the most respected of these.

Château Fortia is one of the oldest winemaking estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, dating back to the 18th century. Baron Pierre Le Roy de Boiseaumarié for whom the Fortia “Cuvée du Baron” is named, created the current Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée (protected designation of origin) system in France. Ultimately, the AOC system played a crucial role in helping to define the fine wine regions of France as we know them today.

The Fortia estate is located in the heart of the region and is marked by its historical chateau (definitely worth a visit if you are ever nearby!). Today, the estate is a special blend of tradition and modernity. Low intervention farming, exacting care of the vineyards and a wonderful new cellar combine to create the delicious wines of Fortia.
