Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils

Burgundy

Six generations of Moreaus have tended these vines since the inception of J. Moreau et Fils in Chablis in 1814. In 1972, after 11 years in the Canadian lumber business, Christian Moreau returned to Chablis with his Canadian wife, Christine, and their three sons, Philippe, Patrick and Fabien. Under the guiding hand of his father Guy, Christian began to pursue the art of winemaking. In 1974, the Moreau family decided to sell a 50 percent stake in J. Moreau et Fils to the Canadian company Hiram Walker, and in 1985 transferred the remaining shares to them. The firm J. Moreau et Fils was then sold to Boisset de Nuits Saint-Georges, since no Moreaus had been involved at that time.

Fabien, a member of the sixth generation of the family to be involved in winemaking, obtained his National Degree in Oenology in Dijon and a Masters in Business Administration at the E.N.I.T.A in Bordeaux. He then went to New Zealand for a year to study the country’s winemaking practices. In December 2001, Fabien returned to Chablis as Managing Director and Head Winemaker at the Domaine Christian Moreau Pere et Fils.

With the 2002 vintage, the Christian Moreau family regained full rights not only to their vineyards, but to make and market the wines belonging to their Domaine.

“International Winery of the Year”, Wine & Spirits, 2015

“In a region where oak regimes are hotly debated, Moreau is solidly in favour of barrel age.  Although he vinifies each parcel separately in stainless steel, he puts at least a portion of all his Premier and Grand Crus in barrels, about 10 percent new. The effect is not so much an addition to flavour but a magnification of what’s already inherent in the wines: These are chalky, firm wines that speak of their origin.”

Joshua Greene, Wine & Spirits Buying Guide, 2015

“Moreau and his son have built Domaine Christian Moreau Père & Fils into one of the best sources of Chablis in the region, alongside names such as Raveneau, Dauvissat, William Fèvre and Patrick Piuze. Moreau’s wines tend to have more flesh but retain the steely core and mineral, iodine elements. Most importantly, they reflect their individual vineyard origins.”

“His Own Man”, Wine Spectator, September 2016

“Domaine Christian Moreau has been one of the most reliable sources of Chablis in recent years.”
Neal Martin, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, August 2017
