Tenuta Valdipiatta

Tuscany

Giulio Caporali purchased Tenuta Valdipiatta in the late 1980’s. At the time, it was simply an old farmhouse and a few hectares of vineyards on the hills that slope down from Montepulciano towards the Val di Chiana. Today, the estate is a top producer of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Rosso di Montepulciano, Chianti Colli Senesi and Vin Santo. Valdipiatta is managed day-to-day by Giulio’s daughter Miriam Caporali, a young entrepreneur. After a career in business consulting, she turned her studies to wine, learning the various aspects of operating a winery from her father and studying in Bordeaux. Miriam Caporali is a winemaker constantly walking her vineyards, observing the differences between grapes grown on light sandy soils or on denser clay, then picking and fermenting them accordingly.
Valdipiatta’s fruit is estate-grown, with 30 hectares sprawling throughout the DOC. The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano production zone is the hilly part of the Commune of Montepulciano, situated at an elevation of 605 metres. The soil is generally of medium consistency, composed mainly of a loose blend of clay and sand, with lens-shaped pockets of pebbles and fossils. The area specifically suited for growing grapes is limited to a portion falling between 250 and 600 meters elevation. For the most part the vineyards have an eastern exposure.
Over the years Tenuta Valdipiatta has taken important steps toward sustainable agriculture. In 2018, the Winery achieved EU organic certification by obtaining the Marchio Comunitario BIO. The vineyards of Tenuta Valdipiatta are an oasis of biodiversity; Valdipiatta‘s organic philosophy consists in approaching the Estate as a closed ecosystem, where everything allows and supports the balance between flora, fauna and human activity.
Valdipiatta’s emphasis on nurturing both terroir and native vines has always gone hand in hand with its interest in applying the results of scientific research. Thus, at the beginning of the 90’s, Valdipiatta began collaborating with Professor Yves Glories, the creator of the Phenolic Maturity Method, who was, at the time, head of the Faculty of Oenology of Bordeaux. This invaluable experience was followed in 2010 by the collaboration with Eric Boissenot, consulting oenologist with presitgious Chateaux of the Médoc such as Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Margaux, Mouton Rothschild and Palmer.
