Zardetto

Veneto

The regions of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene would best be described as “generous” terrain: lush and rolling to the extreme, it is difficult to cultivate. Vineyards grow on very steep slopes, culled from the hills centimetre by centimetre by the hard work of growers. The production zone includes 15 municipalities and extends over an area of approximately 18,000 hectares of agricultural land, 6,100 of which are dedicated to grape-growing. Vines are grown only on the south-facing part of the hills, at a height that may reach 500 metres. In 2009 this special terroir earned DOCG status.

The Zardetto family has been in Conegliano for centuries. For over 100 years they have been growers and bottlers of local grape varietals, predominantly Glera. In 1998, Fabio Zardetto, now the fourth generation to helm the company, decided that the path to success was high quality Prosecco. In 2002, he began building a new winery equipped with the avant-garde technology needed to achieve that goal.

Today, the Zardetto family are proponents of organic farming. They allow the terroir of individual vineyard sites, whether contracted or owned, shine through. Due to the health of the fruit, their wines have a capacity to develop character as they age for two to three years.

“Fabio Zardetto and his family own one of the leading estates in the Conegliano half of the Valdobbiadene-Conegliano territory. This side of the appellation is characterized by thicker red soils and softly rolling hills without the tall peaks you see on the Valdobbiadene side. Temperatures are slightly warmer here and the wines show more yellow fruit and creaminess as a result.”
