Agricola Punica

Agricola Punica has been producing unique wines from Sardinia since 2002. Founded by the legendary Tuscan winemaker, Giacomo Tachis, who saw the potential for grapes grown in the Sulcis region. The winery is made up of two estates, the Barrua and Narcao, both located in the south-western part of Sardinia.

Montessu is an intensely fruity, elegant, and full-bodied wine that combines traditional Sardinian Carignano with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot from the Lower Sulcis. The grapes are grown on spurred cordon vines rooted in calcareous, clay-rich, and sandy soils. The vineyards are exceptionally hot and dry in the summer and temperate through the winter.

“A flavorful nose of cherries, currants, some plums, dried thyme and undergrowth. Medium body with fine tannins. Velvety and layered with a caressing texture. Well-balanced with a focused finish and excellent length. Drink or hold.”
92 points, James Suckling, June 2023

“The 2020 Montessu is a total pleasure. Sweet violets, lavender and cloves accentuate a burst of black raspberries on the nose. This is silky and suave, with masses of ripe red and black fruits that flow across a core of brisk acidity. The 2020 maintains fabulous balance while finishing long and potent yet fresh with a hint of steeped plums that don’t quit. What a beauty.”
92 points, Eric Guido, Vinous Media, October 2023

“A medium- to full-bodied red, with hints of sweet smoke and fig cake underscoring flavors of blackberry coulis and black plum reduction, dried thyme and tea leaf, singed orange peel and ground anise. Balanced and lightly juicy throughout, with fine tannins firming the finish. Carignan, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Drink now through 2027. 11,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.”
90 points, Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator, December 2022
