Barrua is a blend of 85% Carignano and 15% French grown in Agricola Punica’s Narcao and Barrua vineyards – spurred cordon vines cultivated in the calcareous, clay-rich and sandy soils of Basso Sulcis.
The quality of the Carignano grape is exceptional in the Sulcis area of southern Sardinia: exceptional colour and exceptional softness of the grapes, from the tannins to the consistently low and elegant acidity and smoothness.
The bouquet provides complex aromas of ripe red fruit (mainly black cherry), spice, liquorice, and myrtle. The palate is extremely delicate, with round tannins providing a satiny mouthfeel. It is an elegant wine that shows exceptional craftsmanship.
“Perfumed nose with blackcurrants, blackberries and subtle red roses. Full-to medium-bodied with creamy, integrated tannins that caressing the mouth. Just slightly chewy at the end, but will soften in a year or two. Succulent and delicious. Drink or hold.” 93 points, James Suckling, February 2022
“Fresh and subtly spicy aromas are followed by dark red fruits with a dollop of chocolatey richness which, despite a powerful kick of alcohol, is neatly contained in a framework of fine tannins and fresh, juicy acidity. Its grippiness demands food.” 91 points, Anthony Rose, Decanter, May 2022
