Agricola Punica

Barrua is a blend of 85% Carignano and 15% French grown in Agricola Punica’s Narcao and Barrua vineyards – spurred cordon vines cultivated in the calcareous, clay-rich and sandy soils of Basso Sulcis.

The quality of the Carignano grape is exceptional in the Sulcis area of southern Sardinia: exceptional colour and exceptional softness of  the grapes, from the tannins to the consistently low and elegant acidity and smoothness.

The bouquet provides complex aromas of ripe red fruit (mainly black cherry), spice, liquorice, and myrtle. The palate is extremely delicate, with round tannins providing a satiny mouthfeel. It is an elegant wine that shows exceptional craftsmanship.

“Dark ruby red with a purple core and slight brightening on the rim. Intense ripe fruit of blackberry, dark cherry and blueberry on the nose, coupled with spice notes of cinnamon and black pepper. Fruity and juicy on the palate, the tannins are fine-grained but slightly drying with medium length.”
93 points, Othmar Kiem & Simon Staffler, Falstaff, October 2023

“Structured and focused with dark berries, dark cherries, dried herbs, bark and some cloves. Medium to full body with fine, firm tannins. Serious, layered and a bitter chocolate-like, funnelled finish with excellent length. Best after 2024.”
93 points, James Suckling, June 2023

“Intense is the word, as the 2019 Barrua unfolds with a smoky burst of ashen stones and exotic spices that blow off to reveal depths of plum sauce and sage complemented by talc. Silky and polished, this excels with its cooling acidity and savory mineral tones that embellish its core of rich wild berries. Sweet tannins frame the finale, as the 2019 finishes long and spicy with potent balsamic-tinged black fruits and tangerine hints.”
93+ points, Eric Guido, Vinous Media, October 2023
