The Montessu is an intensely fruity, elegant, full-bodied wine that combines traditionally Sardinian Carignano with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot from Sulcis, the Southwest corner of the island. The grapes are grown on spurred cordon vines rooted in calcareous, clay-rich, and sandy soils. The vineyards are exceptionally hot and dry in the summer and temperate through the winter.
“Grown in the clay and limestone soils of southwest Sardinia, this Carignano based red sees the addition of some Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Cab Franc. It begins with tarry chocolate notes and a layer of topsoil lined with blackberry and black pepper. Teeth-gripping notes of anise and dark plum form an intriguing, dence mouthfeel on the finish.” 93 points, The Tasting Panel, October 2021
“A rich and dense red from Sardinia with dark berries and plums, as well as walnuts and bark. It’s full and chewy and slightly rustic. But real at the same time. Drink or hold.” 92 points, James Suckling, February 2022
“A deep brooding ruby in colour, this is showing plenty of vanilla, oak spice and island herbs behind dark fruit aromas. The oak is stylish and the black cherry and plum fruit is attractively sweet on first taste, before turning earthy, savoury and rustic. The fruit is supported by sweet vanilla and then a robust twist of astringency on the finish. Needs food and a bit more time.” 91 points, Decanter, October 2021
