The Angels & Cowboys Sonoma County rosé is crafted using traditional techniques borrowed from the great winemaking domains of Provence in the south of France. This ‘”vin gris” style employs very limited contact between the juice of the grapes and their skins. In keeping with this delicate style, the grapes are harvested and berry flavours are fresh and light with bright and clear acidity.
Fruit is harvested in the cool early morning hours, then loaded directly into the press as whole clusters. After pressing, juice is transferred to stainless steel tanks for fermentation. Following fermentation, the wine rests “sur lie” for several weeks. This imparts a soft, somewhat creamy texture to the wine that adds depth and balances the vibrant acidity.
The nose opens with ripe mango and citrus zest aromatics, leading to white peach, nectarine, fresh raspberry, and lavender on the palate. Delicate and subtly creamy. South of France by way of Sonoma County.
“This is a very pale, pristine-looking rose that with real freshness, good acid and modest 12.5% alcohol, whereas many California pinkies are heavier and sweeter. I suspect some early picking of pinot noir here, but the label gives no clue. Expect vaguely floral, redcurrant/strawberry fruit notes. The finish is a touch earthy and slightly bitter, but the length is very good and it works overall.” 90 points, David Lawrason, Wine Align, July 2022
