Avignonesi is located in the rolling landscape of Montepulciano, Tuscany. Named for the family that founded the winery, Avignonesi has been led by Virginie Sayers since 2009. Virginie is a former lawyer who moved to Italy in 2007, bringing her passion for organic gardening and sustainable living with her. Under her leadership, Avignonesi wines are now certified Organic and Biodynamic.
Grifi is born from two late-ripening grape varieties: one Italian, the other French. An incredible blend where the freshness of Sangiovese blends perfectly with the backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon. After 18 months in oak, the flavours of the two varieties come together in harmony. Tart blueberries and incense on the nose give way to a spicy balsamic explosion supported by perfect acidity.
Enjoy alongside herb grilled meats in the summer, or with a rich and creamy stroganoff in the cooler months; also perfect with hard cheeses such as Pecorino Romano and Parmigiano-Reggiano..
“A linear and tight red with very fine, firm and polished tannins. They nicely frame the wine and give a savory and almost salty undertone. Currants and cherries with some orange peel notes. Just a hint of tomato leaves. Medium chewy. 65% cabernet sauvignon and 35% sangiovese. From biodynamically grown grapes. Vegan. Best after 2026.”

“The 2021 Grifi is understated and coy, slowly evolving with rose petal, dusty dried strawberry and sweet smoke aromas. This is silken in feel with a peppery tinge and polished red berry fruit notes that swirl beneath an air of violet inner florals. A liquid botanical concentration lingers as the 2021 finishes with crunchy tannins and staining of primary concentration. It tapers off with incredible length yet is also balanced. Lose this youthful beauty in the cellar.”
