Domaine Lucien Boillot et Fils is a hidden gem in Burgundy, quietly producing some of the region’s most characterful wines from an enviable collection of old-vine parcels across both the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. Now under the stewardship of Pierre Boillot, the estate is known for its restrained, traditional winemaking and precise expressions of terroir.
This Gevrey-Chambertin comes from a 2.3-hectare parcel planted in 1957 on classic clay-limestone soils. Fermentation takes place over nearly three weeks in stainless steel and enamel-lined tanks, with twice-daily punch-downs to extract depth and structure. The wine is then aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with no more than 30% new wood used, to preserve purity and site expression. In the glass, it shows a bright, concentrated purple hue and leaps out with vivid notes of fresh raspberry, crushed flowers, and subtle spice. There’s notable energy and clarity here—an elegant, finely etched wine with a crunchy red-fruited finish that punches well above its village-level designation.
Enjoy with duck breast in cherry jus, wild mushroom tart, roast quail, or a simple beef carpaccio with shaved Parmesan.
“A bright concentrated purple. Flamboyant dancing raspberry fruit. There is significant intensity here with a crisp crunchy fruit to finish. This is pretty classy for a village Gevrey. Drink from 2029-2033. Tasted Nov 2024.”
