Once again, the famed Three Palms Vineyard has yielded a fascinating and luxuriously full-bodied Merlot. Aromas of huckleberry, black cherry, chocolate and fig rise from the glass, followed by hints of graphite, graham cracker, bay leaf and sage. On the mouth-watering palate the flavours are intense and complex, with velvety tannins and voluptuous fruit balanced by earthy undertones and Three Palms’ classic minerality, all of which carry the wine to a rich and remarkably long finish.
2017 is a riveting expression of Three Palms Vineyard Merlot, with a rich entry and dense layers of dark red fruit, cedar, graphite, and cream. Pure and polished on the palate, these flavours are underscored by firm, structured tannins and subtle sweet oak that will ensure it ages wonderfully for years to come."Powerful, rich and complex, with a refined mix of currant, dark cherry and plum tart flavours backed by suave, medium-grained tannins. Well-defined slate and loamy notes stretch out nicely on the finish, with black olive hints. Drink now through 2027. 4,678 cases made." 96 points and #15 Top 100 Wines of the Year, Wine Spectator, Nov 2020
“The 2017 Duckhorn Three Palms Vineyard Merlot is a blend of 91% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Malbec, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, which was aged aged 18 months in 100% French oak (75% new). It opens to inviting aromas of dark plums, blackberry, dark cherries along with lavender and baking spices. This possesses a medium-plus body with a plush core that is laced with flavours of black and red fruits, along with sweet spice and earthy tones. This glides effortlessly across the palate with a gorgeous round texture that is framed by medium-plus tannins and a long dry finish. It is a wonderful wine to approach early in its youth, but it should also benefit from some short-term cellaring and gain complexity over the next decade.” 93 points, International Wine Report, July 2020 --->
