Fontodi is a certified organic estate located in Tuscany’s storied Conca d’Oro, a natural amphitheatre amidst the hills of Panzano. Under the stewardship of Giovanni Manetti, the winery has become one of Chianti Classico’s most respected producers, known for its deep commitment to Sangiovese and a philosophy that balances innovation with tradition.
The Terrazze San Leolino Gran Selezione is a pure expression of Sangiovese sourced from a single, terraced vineyard site. The vineyard yields fruit of remarkable concentration and character. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeasts, followed by over three weeks of maceration in stainless steel tanks to ensure full extraction of flavour, colour, and tannin. The wine is then matured for 24 months in French oak barrels, allowing it to develop structure, depth, and a fine-grained elegance. Poised and powerful, this Gran Selezione offers layers of ripe cherry, wild herbs, crushed violets, and savoury Tuscan spice.
Enjoy with roast lamb, aged pecorino, or wild mushroom risotto.
“The 2022 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Terrazze San Leolino is very quickly becoming one of the flagship wines at Fontodi. Elevation and alberese soils yield a Chianti Classico endowed with striking salinity and tension. Dark red cherry, plum, spice, new leather, incense and blood orange stain the palate. The 2022 spent 12 months in French oak barriques and a second year in French oak casks. What a wine!”

“Just being bottled as we speak and the quietest opening pronouncement as compared to Pastrolo (Lamole) and Vigna del Sorbo (Panzano – Conca d’Oro). This from the terraces below and in surround of the Pieve up on the hill where Alberese soil predomimates, unique to Fontodi because schisty clay (with Galestro), Pietraforte (calacreous sandstone conglomerate) and Marna di Macigno (marine sandstone) define the other wines. The Alberese limestone makes for a crispier and more “croccante” sangiovese, magnified in 2022 and while this is also quite tannic the catalyst to exaggeration is made by the highest acidity of the three. “Vinoso” but even more “succulenza,” a very specific character that is San Leolino. In fact this Gran Selezione will take longer to come together, but again the vintage dictates and solicits this response. Drink 2028-2037. Tasted February 2025.”
