“Thanks to the softly rolling hills that enclose the area of Panzano, the increased luminosity, and the amphitheater of vineyards known as the Conca d’Oro (or “golden basin”), Panzano has deservedly earned right of recognition. I would argue that it has done more than the other township when it comes to defining its unique geographic wine identity. If the Chianti Classico appellation is eventually divided by township, Panzano should be allowed to stand among them. Not awarding Panzano its own singular identity amounts to a lack of courage and vision in my humble opinion. Among the many excellent estates located in Panzano is Fontodi, one of the finest wine estates in the world.”

Monica Larner on Fontodi, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, April 2017

Fontodi’s Chianti Classico has always represented the winery’s philosophy that quality is of utmost importance. The winery’s reputation as an outstanding Chianti producer is on display in this benchmark wine. It expresses the estate’s terroir perfectly. Produced with Sangiovese from various vineyards within the property, the wine fermented with indigenous yeast in cool tanks, then matured for 18 months in Troncais and Allier casks. An additional three months in bottle give the finished wine a rounded, full texture.

“The 2017 Chianti Classico Fontodi is a wine of extreme elegance that shows how much the house style has evolved here. A decade ago, in a warm year the Fontodi Chianti Classico would have been opulent, but these days proprietor Giovanni Manetti seeks finesse more than power, and that is exactly what comes through here. Ripe red Sangiovese fruit, rose petal, blood orange and spice infuse this racy, exotic Chianti Classico with so much character. The 2017 spent two years in oak, half in cask and half in neutral oak. I loved it. 2022-2037.”
