Burgundy-trained winemaker Davide Rosso leads one of Barolo’s most fascinating wineries. The Rosso family’s Serralunga d’Alba vineyard plots are farmed according to organic and biodynamic practices, with minimal intervention in the cellar: grapes are hand-harvested; wine is vinified slowly in cement tanks with native yeasts, aged in French oak casks for several months, and bottled unfiltered.

Langhe Nebbiolo is made in an earlier-drinking style than Barberesco and Barolo – a “Baby Barolo”, if you will. Direct, elegant, expressive, and truly delicious, the Nebbiolo for Rosso’s Langhe comes from the same vineyards that supply fruit for the winery’s flagship Barolo. This is remarkable value. Aged several months in large oak vats prior to bottling, the wine has bright red fruit flavours;  a spicy, savoury, earthy quality; good structure; and a long finish.

“I often say to Cabernet Sauvignon drinkers that eventually they will make your way to Nebbiolo, the great Italian grape variety used to make Barolo. Here is a wine that will hasten your transition. I’m not sure there is a better wine under $30 [in the B.C. market]. The nose is captivating with its fragrant rose petal and licorice notes. The colour and weight are Pinot Noir-like, and the palate is deliciously juicy and forthcoming from front to back. You can drink this now or cellar three to five years and beyond because it is perfectly balanced. Brava to Giovani Rosso and its commitment to making serious Nebbiolo at all levels. Back up the truck.”
Anthony Gismondi on Giovanni Rosso’s Nebbiolo Langhe, December 2019
