“Brothers Maxime and Antoine Graillot have big shoes to fill given the success of their well-known and highly respected father, Alain. […] This set of 2016’s are some of the best wines that I have had here since I first visited in June 1989. There was a somewhat rigid quality to many of the wines over the last decade and I suspect that was a result of 100% whole clusters used across the board. The 2016’s, on the other hand, show an impressively graceful fluidity, energy and detail that I find extremely appealing, not to mention impressive, even in the context of a vintage that showcases those qualities.”

“La Guiraude” is a special cuvée produced only in exceptional vintages. This is a rare and spectacular wine. Composed entirely of organically-grown hand-harvested Syrah from vines over 30-years-old, fruit is whole cluster-fermented in concrete by native yeast, then aged in one to three-year-old French oak.
Alain Graillot has proved beyond a doubt that it is possible to make rich wines from the flat land near the Isère River confluence. These concentrated reds demonstrate all that is exciting about the Syrah grape: black fruit, intense aromatics, pepper, and spicy complexity underpinned by crisp acidity and fine tannins. They are difficult to resist young, but patient cellaring for at least five years is well-rewarded.
“Opaque ruby. A complex, expansive bouquet evokes fresh dark berries, olive, potpourri and incense, and exotic spice and mineral notes build steadily with air. Sweet, focused and penetrating on the palate, offering intense, spice-tinged boysenberry, cherry preserve and violet pastille flavors braced by a core of juicy acidity. Blends concentration and energy with a deft hand and finishes with superb, gently tannic persistence.”

“Showing greater intensity and complexity than the regular bottling, the 2016 Crozes Hermitage la Guiraude also is made entirely whole cluster, yet it shows less prominent stemmy notes. Olive, roasted meat and cherry notes mingle easily on the nose and palate. This is medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, fine, elegant finish. It should drink well for over a decade.”
