The Saint-Joseph Rouge is one of the rarest wines in the Alain Graillot portfolio—a small-production, granite-grown expression of Syrah that is firmer, darker and more mineral than the domaine’s signature Crozes-Hermitage. They produce around 5,000 bottles from approximately 1.5 hectares divided between two sectors: Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, opposite Tain-l’Hermitage, and the hills above Andance farther north.
The wine is 100% Syrah, harvested by hand. Unlike Graillot’s traditionally whole-cluster Crozes-Hermitage, the Saint-Joseph fruit is destemmed, fermented in concrete and matured for roughly 12-18 months in used oak barrels.
Fragrant aromas of blackberry, crushed raspberry and violet are layered with black pepper, smoked meat, olive tapenade and a subtle stony note. Medium-bodied and energetic, the palate combines juicy dark fruit with fine-grained tannins, bright acidity and a distinctly mineral finish.
“Lively, mineral and driven, offering aromas of forest berries, stones, violets and mild spices. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins. Terroir-driven, crunchy and vivid. Precise, with a transparent, floral, succulent and energetic finish. Drink or hold.”
